"Please accept my deepest condolences on the tragic consequences of the terrorist attack near the town of Pahalgam, which targeted peaceful people—citizens of various countries. There can be no justification for this brutal crime. We trust that its organizers and perpetrators will receive the punishment they deserve," Putin was quoted by the Kremlin as saying in a letter to Indian leadership.
The Russian leader also said that Moscow is ready to further develop cooperation with its Indian partners to combat all forms and manifestations of terrorism.
A terrorist attack near the Indian town of Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir claimed the lives of 28 people, including foreigners, Indian channel News18 reported on Tuesday, citing police sources.
A group of terrorists of the Resistance Front, affiliated with the Lashkar-e-Taiba group* opened indiscriminate fire on a group of tourists as they were riding horses, the channel said.
Twelve people – all reportedly Indian nationals – were injured in the attack and are now hospitalized in Pahalgam in a stable condition.
A survivor of the attack told Press Trust of India that the terrorists were inquiring about the religion of the tourists before opening fire.
"The terrorists asked my name and religion first, and then shot me," she was quoted as saying.
Jammu and Kashmir officials said they are concerned about the attack given a mass pilgrimage is planned for early July to the Amarnath Caves, which is one of the most famous Hindu shrines. Tens of thousands of people are expected to attend the 38-day pilgrimage starting on July 3.
