Senior Turkmen, Afghan Officials Discuss TAPI Gas Pipeline Construction

Turkmen Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov and acting Deputy Prime Minister of Afghanistan Abdul Ghani Baradar discussed the construction of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline, the Turkmen Foreign Ministry said in a statement Thursday.

The meeting was held on the sidelines of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) summit in Khankendi, Azerbaijan.
"The interlocutors discussed current issues in the field of political, diplomatic, trade and economic cooperation. Particular attention was paid to energy and transport and communications interaction... construction of the transnational Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline, power transmission lines and fiber-optic communication along the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan (TAP) route were touched upon," the statement said.
The TAPI gas pipeline is the largest regional energy project with a length of 1,821 kilometers (1,132 miles) and a throughput capacity of 33 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually. The construction of the pipeline began in 2015 in Turkmenistan. According to the project, the gas pipeline will pass through the Afghan cities of Herat and Kandahar, the Pakistani cities of Quetta and Multan and reach the Fazilka point on the Indian-Pakistani border.
