India-China Border Calm Settles as Grazing Rights Resume: Indian Army Chief

India and China were involved in a bitter military stand-off for over five years in eastern Ladakh, which finally ended in October 2024 after both sides agreed to disengage from friction points following a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping in Kazan.

Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi on Tuesday said that the situation at the India-China border was stable but needed constant vigil before underlining that both sides have reached an agreement about grazing grounds.
"Apex-level interactions, renewed contact, and confidence-building measures are contributing to the gradual normalisation of the situation. This has also enabled grazing, hydrotherapy camps, and other activities along the northern borders," Dwivedi said at the annual Army Day press conference in New Delhi.
The Army chief revealed that both nations have established a wide variety of communication channels, right from the station level to the CO level, up to the core commander level, so that issues are resolved at that level.

General Dwivedi highlighted that this has actually drawn the results, where the two sides have sat down together and resolved the issue.
"You know what kind of understanding we reached on October 21, 2024. Before that, the two top leaders (Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping) met in Kazan. After that, they met in Tianjin, and in between, we had our SR-level meetings. Similarly, we have had our WMCC (Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination) meetings, and in addition to all this, our defence minister has met with their defence minister twice," he stated.

"Our foreign minister has met with their foreign minister twice. As a result, what is happening is that there is a kind of sense of urgency and a sense of acceptance from both sides to keep the borders as calm and quiet as possible," India's top Army official stressed.
