India, Pakistan Agree to Continue Reducing Alertness Level - Indian Army
The Indian and Pakistani have agreed to pursue further confidence-building measures aimed at reducing the level of military alertness, an Indian Army official said on Thursday.
"Further to the understanding reached between the DGMOs [Directors General of Military Operations] of India and Pakistan on 10 May 25, it has been decided to continue confidence-building measures so as to reduce the alertness levels," an Indian army official was quoted as saying by Indian news agency ANI.
Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said earlier in the day that India and Pakistan had agreed to extend the cessation of hostilities until May 18.
Tensions between India and Pakistan escalated following the terrorist attack near the town of Pahalgam in the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir on April 22, which killed 26 people, including a Nepalese citizen. The terrorist-linked Resistance Front insurgent group claimed responsibility for the attack.
India blamed the attack on Pakistan and downgraded their diplomatic ties, suspending the Indus Waters Treaty and closing the only functioning land border crossing between the two countries. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave the army operational freedom to decide on the manner, targets and timing of a response to the Pahalgam attack.
India and Pakistan agreed on May 10 to cease all shelling and military action on land, in the air and at sea from 17:00 (11:30 GMT), but in the evening of the same day, the head of the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir Omar Abdullah reported the sounds of explosions and the work of Indian air defense near the city of Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir.
