Earlier this year, the Indian Air Force's (IAF) might was on considerable display after it wreaked havoc on Pakistani military installations, destroying runways, aircraft hangars, radar sites, and fighter jets, amongst others.
Following its successful conduct of Operation Sindoor (India's counter-terrorism mission against Pakistan in May 2025), the IAF has emerged as the third most powerful air force on the planet, according to the latest World Directory of Modern Military Aircraft (WDMMA) rankings.
With a score of 69.4, the IAF is only behind the US Air Force (242.9) and the Russian Air Force (114.2), while the Chinese Air Force, also known as the People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF), occupies the fourth spot with a rating of 63.8.
Interestingly, the IAF's total air assets stand at 1,716 units, which surge to 2,488 units when combined with the Indian Navy's 232 and the Army Aviation wing's 540.
Notably, over 50 percent of the IAF's assets are of Russian origin, with the Su-30MKI being its frontline fighter.
The country's sky guarding force has around 260 Su-30MKIs in its ranks. Besides, the IAF operates the MiG-29 warplanes and the IL-78 air refuelers.
Furthermore, the Mi-17 and Mi-35 are the mainstays of its helicopter squadrons.
