The talks between the US and Iranian delegations are expected to take place in Islamabad with Pakistan acting as a mediator, as it hopes to achieve a lasting peace in the Middle East. CNN reported that the talks are expected to be conducted both directly and through intermediaries.
The Iranian delegation intends to assess the US position and its compliance with its obligations during the meetings today, after which it will decide on negotiations, the news agency added.
The Iranian delegation for talks with the United States is led by Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf. The delegation also includes Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, National Security Council Secretary Ali Akbar Ahmadian, and Central Bank Governor Abdolnaser Hemmati.
US President Donald Trump announced an agreement with Iran on a two-week ceasefire on Tuesday. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi later announced the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, which accounts for about 20% of the world's oil, petroleum products, and LNG supplies.
