On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won an unprecedented seventh straight term in his home state of Gujarat.
The BJP's landslide win in Gujarat received widespread attention in foreign media with most outlets featuring photographs and reports of the party's celebrations on their front pages.
The BJP's campaign was led by its mascot, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and the party broke all previous records, capturing 156 seats in a 182-member legislative assembly. The main opposition party, Congress, suffered a drubbing, winning just 17 constituencies in the western coastal state.
Not only Gujarat's incumbent party broke Congress' previous record of winning 149 constituencies in the assembly polls in 1985, but also became the first political outfit to breach the 150-seat barrier since the formation of the state in 1960.
British publication The Guardian wrote that BJP's spectacular victory in Gujarat has provided a major push to India's ruling party ahead of national elections in 2024.
"The Indian prime minister, Narendra Modi, was given a significant boost as his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won a landslide victory in his home state of Gujarat, a sign of the party’s enduring popularity before a general election due in 2024," the newspaper reported.
Highlighting how BJP has controlled Gujarat for the past 27 years, Japan's Nikkei Asia credited PM Modi's grassroots connection with the state's people for the party's victory.
Modi was the longest-serving State Chief of Gujarat where he occupied the top post from 2001 to 2014 before shifting to Delhi after being elected as the South Asian nation's Prime Minister.
"(PM Narendra) Modi is wildly popular in the state, where he served as chief minister for nearly 13 years before becoming prime minister in 2014," the newspaper wrote.
"Many residents take pride in the fact that the Gujarat-born Modi represents India at the global level, and feel a sense of responsibility to support him," the Japanese daily added.
Meanwhile, Al Jazeera said the BJP's sweeping victory pointed towards a higher percentage of consolidation of Hindu votes in favor of the party.
The Straits Times of Singapore shared identical views to the London-headquartered The Guardian as accredited PM Modi's popularity in Gujarat for the BJP's sweeping win.
"The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) surged to victory in the western state of Gujarat for a record seventh consecutive win, a sign of the continuing popularity of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi," the media outlet concluded.
