Bihar State Chief Nitish Kumar is a key opposition figure who is leading efforts to unite all opposition parties ahead of the next national elections in 2024.
After dropping multiple hints in recent days, Nitish Kumar on Tuesday announced that his deputy Tejashwi Yadav of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) will be his political heir in Bihar and their ruling coalition will contest the 2025 state polls under the young politician's leadership.

"I am not the Prime Ministerial candidate or Chief Ministerial candidate. My goal is to defeat the BJP, " Nitish Kumar asserted during an interaction with party legislators of his Janata Dal (United) party, alliance partner RJD, and other smaller constituents of Bihar's ruling coalition.

"Tejashwi has to be encouraged," the Bihar State Chief added.
Nitish Kumar's remarks in praise of Tejashvi Yadav came only days after the former's party lost a key bypoll to the Kurhani assembly constituency in the state to the BJP.
Political pundits have termed the defeat as a setback for Nitish Kumar, considering he severed ties with the BJP in August and allied with Tejashwi Yadav's RJD and the Congress to form a new government in the state.
As Nitish Kumar went back to the RJD, Tejashwi returned as his deputy for the second time in his short political career. He held the same post from 2015 to 2017, when his party ran the Bihar government in partnership with Nitish Kumar's JD(U).
However, the numerical strengths of the two parties are vastly different in the state legislature - while the RJD is the single largest party with 79 seats, JD(U) has only 45 members in the assembly.
Besides many pollsters have pointed out his national ambitions as one of the main reasons behind his move to hand over the state's chair to Tejashwi.
Since parting ways with the BJP, Nitish Kumar has ramped up his efforts to bring together all anti-BJP parties for a collective fight against Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the 2024 national polls. While he has publicly denied having prime ministerial aspirations, his party has left no space whatsoever to promote him as Prime Minister Modi's chief rival.
A couple of months ago, JD(U) put up posters all over the state capital Patna, highlighting the work done by him as the State Chief besides taking digs at Modi's tenure as the country's top leader.
Nitish Kumar has been the longest-serving State Chief of Bihar, having ruled it almost uninterruptedly since 2005.
