Breakthrough Surgery of Indian Daily Wage Worker Who Lost His Arm & Legs
11:48 15.12.2022 (Updated: 12:43 15.12.2022) Vinod Gupta, who was discharged from the hospital on Wednesday, will now learn how to walk with the help of his prosthetic legs.
A daily wage worker from Sultanpur, a district in India's Uttar Pradesh state received a new lease on life after losing both of his legs and an arm due to high-voltage electrocution while working at a factory.
Being the only breadwinner of a truly extended family, including his elderly parents, wife, and two young daughters, Vinod Gupta's life came to a standstill following the hair-raising accident.
The tragedy left Vinod with severe burn injuries and damaged his skull. His right arm was rendered non-functional. To cap it all off, doctors had to amputate his limbs because they developed severe septicaemia (blood poisoning by bacteria).
Religare Care Foundation, along with the doctors from Delhi's Sri Ganga Ram Hospital, stepped in to restore his arm and legs through multiple first-of-a-kind prosthetic surgeries.
Dr. Mahesh Mangal, senior plastic and cosmetic surgeon at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi, who performed the surgery on Gupta for 8 hours, shared that it was one of the most challenging cases they have come across.
Dr. Mangal explained that it was hard to control the infections while performing the surgery, while another challenge was to 'reconstruct Vinod's right hand so that it would be functional again.
Lauding the doctors' efforts, Dr. Rashmi Saluja, Executive Chairperson of Religare Enterprises Ltd., shared that a few months ago, the whole thing would have seemed far from possible.
Vinod was hospitalized with a broken spirit. Now, thanks to the brilliant work done by the doctors, he is bright and shining again.
