The Indian state of Gujarat witnessed massive clashes between Hindus and Muslims in 2002, when Modi was its chief minister. While Modi’s political opponents accuse him of looking the other way during the sectarian clashes, a special investigation team (SIT) has absolved him of any culpability in the riots. India’s Supreme Court has upheld the decision of the SIT.
Activists from BJP’s youth wing Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) burned effigies of Pakistan's Foreign Minister in Jammu. In Mumbai, BJP activists took out a massive demonstration against Zardari as they shouted slogans and carried placards denouncing the foreign minister.
Similar protests also took place in other Indian cities, including the national capital New Delhi.
The BJP also held a demonstration against Zardari at the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi on Friday.
The BJP has described Zardari’s remarks against the Indian PM as “derogatory, defamatory and full of cowardice,” according to a statement issued on Friday.
“The kind of language Bilawal Bhutto has used is extremely reprehensible, and doesn’t reflect the true spirit of statesmanship and crosses the limit of decency in public life,” the BJP said.
In a separate statement, the Indian foreign ministry has said that Zardari’s remarks are a “new low, even for Pakistan.” Arindam Bagchi, the foreign ministry spokesperson, further reiterated New Delhi’s charge about Pakistan’s “indisputable role in sponsoring, harboring, and actively financing terrorist and terrorist organizations.”
“The Pakistani FM’s uncivilized outburst seems to be a result of Pakistan’s increasing inability to use terrorists and their proxies,” the Indian official said.
He said that Zardari’s “frustration” should be directed towards “masterminds of terrorist enterprises” in the country, as he underlined that 126 UN-designated terrorists and 27 UN-designated terrorist entities were present in Pakistan.
