There's been a spike in terrorist incidents in Pakistan, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan regions, since the Taliban* came to power in Kabul in August 2021.
The Taliban warned Pakistan on Monday that it will retaliate should Islamabad launch an operation against the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) terrorist grouping in Afghanistan.
The warning was made after Pakistan's Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah said that Islamabad might target the TTP in Afghanistan if the Afghan government failed to take action to dismantle the group.
"When these problems arise, we first ask Afghanistan, our Islamic brother nation, to eliminate these hideouts and hand over these individuals to us. But if that doesn't happen, what you mentioned (ops inside Afghanistan) is possible,” Rana said.
The Afghan Ministry of National Defense called these remarks "provocative and baseless," and said they damaged the good “brotherly” relations between the two countries.
The Taliban also pointed out that the TTP has centers in Pakistan rather than in Afghanistan.

“We are ready to defend the territorial integrity and independence of our homeland, and it is mentionable we have a better experience than anyone in defending and protecting our country,” the Afghan MoD said.

The Taliban has requested that any concerns or problems be resolved through understanding and communication.
According to statistics from the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS), a think tank based in Islamabad, the number of militant attacks in December 2022 was 44% higher compared to November.
*The Taliban is under UN sanctions for terrorism.
**Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) is a terrorist group banned in Russia.
