Security has been intensified in the Jammu region and a massive manhunt is underway to locate two men reportedly responsible for six killings in Kashmir's Rajouri district.
Jammu and Kashmir Police have announced a reward of one million rupees ($12,000) for information concerning suspected militants who killed six people in a village on Sunday and Monday, including two children.
Authorities have assured the public that all sources will remain anonymous.
The announcement coincided with the visit of India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA) to the crime scene in Dangri village. The agency has now taken over the investigation of the case which has created tensions in the region.
Four people were killed and six injured after militants stormed Dangri village on Sunday evening. Police said the villagers were taken out of their homes after being asked to produce identification documents and shot at indiscriminately.
Later, on Monday morning, two minors also died and four others were left wounded after an improvised explosive device went off in one of the houses.
The victims' last rites were performed on Tuesday, with hundreds of people and top police and administrative officials attending the cremation.
The mourners also carried out a procession and raised slogans as they gathered at the cremation ground, local media reported.
Earlier, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha visited the village and expressed solidarity with the bereaved families.
