Myanmar Vows to Protect Sovereignty Amid Concerns of Foreign Meddling
The US, the EU, and some other Western countries have imposed sanctions on the military and individuals in response to the military coup in Myanmar and the subsequent crackdown on protesters.
On Wednesday, the head of the Myanmar military government, Min Aung Hlaing, accused unnamed nations of interfering in the country's internal affairs while expressing gratitude to those who have cooperated "positively."
"We are closely working with neighbouring countries such as China, India, Thailand, Laos and Bangladesh. We will work together for border stability and development," Min Aung Hlaing said in a televised speech.
In his Independence Day speech, the military chief also announced the release of more than 7,000 prisoners, without specifying whether this would include those jailed for dissent.
Hlaing said the military is holding discussions with political parties on the proportional representation electoral system, but provided no further details. The US has criticized the military government's plan to hold elections, calling it a "sham" and expressing concern that they will not be free and fair.
Last month, China, Russia and India abstained from a UN resolution calling for an end to violence and the release of all political prisoners.
In a parliamentary report released in December, the Indian Foreign Ministry noted that the ongoing political turmoil in Myanmar has impacted the implementation of aid projects.
