Top Indian wrestlers staged a protest against the Wrestling Federation of India chief last week, accusing him of sexual harassment. However, the protest was called off on the third day after the intervention of the Sports Ministry.
Wrestlers Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik expressed displeasure over the formation of a panel to probe sexual harassment allegations against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) Chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh on Tuesday.

"We were assured that before the constitution of the Oversight Committee, we would be consulted. It's very unfortunate that even our suggestions were not taken," they complained in a tweet posted in Hindi and shared by all three wrestlers.

Sports Minister Anurag Thakur announced the oversight committee on Monday, which includes ace boxer M.C. Mary Kom, London Olympics bronze medallist Yogeshwar Dutt, former badminton player Trupti Murgunde, member of Sports Authority of India’s (SAI) Mission Olympic cell, and ex-administrators of SAI Radhica Sreeman and Rajesh Rajagopalan.
The oversight committee was set up after the grapplers’ three-day protest in Jantar Mantar in Delhi.

The wrestlers started their protest on January 18. On the very first day, athlete Vinesh Phogat leveled serious accusations against WFI chief, alleging that he had been sexually harassing female wrestlers for years.
The protest was joined by ace wrestlers like Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist Bajrang Punia, Rio Olympics medalist Sakshi Malik, world championship medalist Sarita Mor, and many more.

The wrestlers demanded that the WFI, along with state federations, be dissolved and the WFI chief be removed from the post immediately.

However, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh denied any misconduct, claiming that if any women wrestler were able to prove the charges against him, he was ready to face the accusations.
Taking cognizance of the protest, the Sports Ministry asked the WFI to submit its response in 72 hours. However, the grapplers were not satisfied with the action.
On the second day, Sports Minister Anurag Thakur held a meeting with the wrestlers which remained inconclusive.
Thakur again held a meeting with the wrestlers on the third day and announced that the committee would be formed to probe the charges against the WFI chief. He also said that the chief will not look into the daily affairs of the federation till the investigation against him concluded.
The committee has been asked to submit its report in four weeks.
