Seven days have been set aside as Martyrs’ Day or Shaheed Diwas in India to honor those who sacrificed their life for the country.
The penultimate day of January is the anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi's death.
On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the nation in paying rich tributes to India's freedom struggle icon Mahatma Gandhi on the 75th anniversary of his death.
Although all the martyrs who sacrificed their life during the country's freedom struggle were remembered, Prime Minister Modi said on Twitter that he bows down before Mahatma Gandhi - the Father of the Nation - and his profound thoughts.

President Droupadi Murmu attended an ecumenical prayer session 'Sarva Dharma Prarthana Sabha' [All religious paths lead to the same destination] to pay her tribute at the Rajghat, the memorial to Gandhi in Delhi.
Meanwhile, various federal ministers and politicians from across the parties also paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi.
Home Minister Amit Shah said in a tweet in Hindi: “Tributes to Mahatma Gandhi, who inspired the country to be self-reliant by following the path of indigenous self-reliance, on the anniversary of his death. A true tribute to him would be to adopt the ideas of cleanliness, indigenous and self-language in the golden age of independence.”

Congress parliamentarian Rahul Gandhi, who is in Jammu and Kashmir for his 'Bharat Jodo Yatra' [Unite India March], said in a tweet in Hindi: “Bapu taught the whole country to live with love, equality of all religions and to fight for the truth. Tributes to the father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi on his martyrdom day.”

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, popularly known as Mahatma Gandhi, was one of the most important freedom fighters who managed to unite Indians in their struggle against the British rule.
He was referred as "Father of Nation' by iconic freedom fighter and charismatic orator Subhas Chandra Bose during his address on Singapore Radio on 6 July 1944.
Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated by Nathuram Godse on 30 January 1948.
