In 2014, when Telangana state was carved out of Andhra Pradesh, the city of Hyderabad existed as the capital of the undivided state of Andhra.
Visakhapatnam will serve as the new capital of Andhra Pradesh, state chief Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy said on Tuesday, ending years of uncertainty over the status of capital city in the southeastern Indian state.
"Here I am to invite you to Visakhapatnam which will be our capital in the days to come. I will also be shifting to Visakhapatnam in the months to come," Reddy said at the International Diplomatic Alliance conclave in New Delhi.

Issue of Andhra Pradesh's Capital

Reddy's announcement came following a longstanding saga over the issue, which started after Hyderabad became the capital of the new state of Telangana, which was carved out of Andhra Pradesh in 2014, leaving the latter without a capital city of its own.
Initially, the Andhra government operated from Hyderabad, but in 2015, the government, led by Reddy's bitter rival N. Chandrababu Naidu, announced that the new capital would come up in the city of Amaravati, located on the banks of the Krishna River.

'Far-Fetched': Tamil Nadu Governor Denies He Wanted to Rename the State
Even as the construction of a new and modern legislative assembly and other government offices was underway in Amaravati, Reddy won a landslide victory in the 2019 state polls.
A year later, his government altered the previous government's plan, declaring that the state would have three capitals — Amaravati, Visakhapatnam, and Kurnool: while Amaravati was designated to become the legislative capital, Visakhapatnam and Kurnool would serve as the executive and judicial capitals respectively.
That plan was later suspended upon the intervention of the High Court, and Amaravati officially remained Andhra Pradesh's capital.
Although the state High Court ruled against the three-capital plan, a plea filed by Reddy's YSR Congress Party is pending in the Supreme Court, which is yet to announce its verdict on the matter.
