The IAF has kickstarted the process to replace its aging fleet of AN-32s, a Soviet-era transport aircraft that has been in service since 1986.As per the Request For Information (RFI) issued by the IAF, it is seeking to procure a Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA) with a load capacity of 18 to 30 tons. The vendors have also been asked to provide a rough estimate of the cost of procurement of 40 aircraft/60 aircraft/80 aircraft, including other similar equipment. The military plane is to be manufactured in the country under the "Make in India" policy."Make in India" is the Narendra Modi government's flagship program envisaged to initiate the localization of defense platforms, including missiles, tanks, submarines, aircraft carriers, fighter jets, helicopters, field guns, drones, etc.The IAF currently operates a fleet of 100 AN-32s, but the aircraft has been marred in controversy in recent years due to frequent crashes.Previously, a project to jointly co-develop and produce a transport plane with a carrying capacity of 20 tonnes with India's trusted defense partner Russia was scrapped over design issues. The other aging transport plane in the IAF inventory is the Avro aircraft, which will be replaced by the Airbus C-295MW.In September last year, the Indian Defense Ministry headed by Rajnath Singh inked a $2.5 billion contract for the acquisition of 56 Airbus C-295 aircraft. The IAF is executing the project in partnership with Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL), the country's first project where a private Indian company has been involved in the manufacturing of a major defense product. The first Airbus C-295 aircraft is expected to be rolled out from a manufacturing facility in Gujarat in September 2026.

IAF to Acquire New Medium Transport Aircraft to Replace Aging Fleet of AN-32s

The IAF has kickstarted the process to replace its aging fleet of AN-32s, a Soviet-era transport aircraft that has been in service since 1986.
As per the Request For Information (RFI) issued by the IAF, it is seeking to procure a Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA) with a load capacity of 18 to 30 tons.
"The overall time frame of production, delivery with stage wise breakup of the entire project post conclusion of contract is required to be submitted. It is envisaged to commence deliveries of platform within 36 months of signing of Contract," the RFI added.
The vendors have also been asked to provide a rough estimate of the cost of procurement of 40 aircraft/60 aircraft/80 aircraft, including other similar equipment.
The military plane is to be manufactured in the country under the "Make in India" policy.
"Make in India" is the Narendra Modi government's flagship program envisaged to initiate the localization of defense platforms, including missiles, tanks, submarines, aircraft carriers, fighter jets, helicopters, field guns, drones, etc.
The IAF currently operates a fleet of 100 AN-32s, but the aircraft has been marred in controversy in recent years due to frequent crashes.
Previously, a project to jointly co-develop and produce a transport plane with a carrying capacity of 20 tonnes with India's trusted defense partner Russia was scrapped over design issues.
