Blasphemy is a sensitive issue in Muslim-majority Pakistan — previously, Tik Tok, YouTube, and other social media websites have been restricted in the country over controversial content.
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has ordered to unblock access to Wikipedia, days after the federal government restricted it over "blasphemous content."
"The Prime Minister is pleased to direct that the website (Wikipedia) may be restored with immediate effect," Minister of Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb tweeted late Monday evening.
Wikipedia is a free online encyclopedia created and edited by volunteers worldwide and hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation.
Wikipedia receives about 50 million page views every month from Pakistan.
Meanwhile, the Wikimedia Foundation told foreign media that it "was made aware that the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) had been directed to restore access to Wikipedia" and hoped to
see online traffic in Pakistan "resume soon."Last week, while blocking Wikipedia, Malahat Obaid, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) spokesperson, said, "such things hurt the sentiments of Muslims."
However, the PTA did not disclose the content or topic they objected to.
