The complications made her pregnancy a risky affair, however, despite only slight hope of recovery, the mother and her family decided to pursue surgery.
A team of interventional cardiologists and fetal medicine specialists performed a rare 'Balloon dilation' procedure at the Cardiothoracic Sciences Centre in AIIMS.
Senior doctors told Indian media that with advanced technology and procedures, serious heart diseases and other ailments can be diagnosed while the baby is in the mother's womb, and treating them before their birth can improve the baby's condition to normal.
The doctors first placed a needle through the mother's abdomen into the baby's heart and then, using a balloon catheter, they opened the obstructed valve to improve the blood flow.
After the surgery, the doctors hope for the healthy development of the baby's heart and that its delivery will be a success.
While the fetus and the mother are reportedly doing well after the procedure, the doctors are monitoring the heart of the child to ultimately determine the baby's future management.
