The Chennai-Vladivostok maritime lane seeks to cut down the transport time between India and Russia’s resource-rich Far East and Arctic region.
New Delhi and Moscow have discussed ’operationalizing’ the Chennai-Vladivostok maritime corridor, connecting India’s southern coast to the Russian Far East region and beyond, Indian Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said on Tuesday.
The minister made the announcement after his meeting with Alexei Chekunkov, the visiting Russian Minister for the Development of the Far East and Arctic, in New Delhi.
The two delegates discussed boosting bilateral maritime ties, which include cargo transportation along the Northern Sea route as well as container shipments between the Russian Far East and Indian ports, Sonowal said.

The Indian Shipping Minister added that New Delhi would also like to boost cooperation in the training of Indian seafarers in the Arctic region.

What is the Chennai-Vladivostok Corridor?

The sea route connecting the south Indian port to the Pacific Ocean port of Vladivostok, the largest Russian city in the country’s Far-Eastern region, is nearly 5,600 nautical miles long. The shipping lane passes through the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea before entering the Sea of Japan.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a Memorandum of Intent (MoI) to develop the Chennai-Vladivostok shipping lane during the Indian leader’s visit to Russia in 2019.
India has been looking to bolster its economic presence in the Russian Far East under Prime Minister Modi’s ‘Act Far East Policy’.
The region is rich in natural gas, coal, timber, and rare earth minerals. In fact, the Indian Prime Minister announced a line of credit for Indian companies interested in investing in the Far East region.
