The annual international two-day conference for disaster relief began on Tuesday and will be attended by 40 countries. The gathering was proposed by India in 2019 at the UN Secretary-General's Climate Action Summit.
India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday underlined the need for an integrated response to natural catastrophes in a closely connected world. He was speaking at the opening of the fifth International Conference for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (ICDRI) in New Delhi.

"Disasters in one region can greatly effect a completely different region. Therefore, our response has to be integrated, not isolated," he said while addressing the conference.

This year's theme for the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) is related to 'Delivering Resilient and Inclusive Infrastructure'. India's PM noted that infrastructure is not only about returns but also about reach and resilience.
He said the infrastructure "must leave none behind and serve the people even during times of crisis. Further, a holistic view of infrastructure is needed. Social and digital infrastructure is as critical as transport infrastructure."

Focusing on recent natural disasters witnessed around the world, the Prime Minister said: "We had heat waves across India and Europe. Earthquakes, cyclones and volcanoes harmed many island nations. The earthquakes in Turkiye and Syria caused great loss of life and property. Your work is becoming more relevant. There are great expectations from the CDRI."
