Rajasthan State Chief Ashok Gehlot and former deputy state chief Pilot are two important faces of Congress in Rajasthan, who have been at odds with each other for the past two years.
Congress politician and former deputy state chief of Rajasthan Sachin Pilot is observing a day-long hunger strike on Monday to protest his party's Ashok Gehlot-led government.
Pilot arrived at Jaipur's Shaheed Smarak (Martyr memorial) at 11 a.m. on Monday and garlanded pictures of Indian freedom struggle icon Mahatma Gandhi and social reformer Jyotirao Phule. After that, he started his protest with patriotic songs being played in the background.
It's worth noting that on Monday night, Congress warned Pilot that a hunger strike went against the party's interests and could be treated as an "anti-party activity", prompting disciplinary action against him.
Pilot has accused Gehlot of failing to act on allegations of corruption purpotedly witnessed during Bharatiya Janata Party's tenure as Rajasthan government. The case goes back to 2015, when Congress accused the BJP state government of allocating 653 mines in the state arbitrarily, in violation of the rules.
Hundreds of Congress workers, politicians, president, and founder of Sarv Brahmin Mahasabha, Pandit Suresh Mishra, and former Jaipur mayor Jyoti Khandelwal accompanied Pilot on the stage.
However, no Congress lawmaker joined Pilot.

Meanwhile, Congress's Rajasthan in-charge, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, suggested Pilot should discuss any issues against his government within the party forums rather than raising them in public.

Several media reports suggest that Pilot confirmed to Randhawa that his (Pilot's) fight was against graft under the then-BJP leader Vasundhara Raje-led regime and did not target anyone else.

He also allegedly agreed to sit on a "maun vrat" (silent sit-in) and not make statements directly against the government.

Meanwhile, the BJP opined that Pilot's protest should be viewed to be an "open challenge to the Congress party's high command".

Rajasthan is one of only three states in which India's main opposition party - Congress - currently rules without an alliance, the other two being Himachal Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.
The loggerhead between Pilot and Gehlot has continued since it formed a government in Rajasthan in 2018. However, it turned publically sour when Pilot was later stripped of his post as deputy state chief in 2020.
The state assembly elections in Rajasthan are due at the end of this year.
