Earlier this year, the Income Tax Department conducted three-day "surveys" at the BBC's India offices on suspicion of tax irregularities.
India's federal probe agency the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has registered a case against BBC India under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) for alleged foreign exchange violation, reported media on Thursday.
The case was reportedly registered two weeks ago, and about six employees were questioned, including BBC India's director.
The ED has asked the media channel to share its books of accounts and financial details. The report suggests that the probe agency is probing for FDI violations.
In February, the Income Tax Department conducted surveys at the BBC's Delhi and Mumbai offices for "non-compliance" with transfer pricing rules and vast diversion of profits.
A survey is usually a precursor to a search and seizure operation and takes place only at business premises. During the surveys in February, Income Tax Department officials looked into the books of accounts, bank accounts, cash, stock, and non-valuable documents.
Following the surveys, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), the administrative body for the Income Tax department, said the income and profits shown by various BBC group entities were "not commensurate" with the scale of their operations in India, and tax had not been paid on certain remittances by its foreign entities.
