Eleven people died, and about 50 were taken to hospital due to heatstroke and dehydration while attending an award ceremony on Sunday, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis told reporters.The state government organized the Maharashtra Bhushan Award event between 11:30 am and 1 pm at an open ground in Mumbai’s Kharghar area on Sunday, which was attended by federal home minister Amit Shah and state chief Eknath Shinde.More than one million people attended the event, according to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers.Sunday witnessed a high temperature of 38 degrees Celsius in the Kharghar area. About 300 people complained of dehydration, high blood pressure and heat-related problems, they received medical care.Media reports say out of these 50 who were hospitalized, 24 would be discharged by Monday morning.The state chief announced an ex-gratia of INR 500,000 to the next of kin of the deceased and free medical treatment for those who are admitted.Meanwhile, opposition leaders accused the state government of not properly planning the event.

Last week, the the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted many states would witness heat stroke incidents in the coming days.
Eleven people died, and about 50 were taken to hospital due to heatstroke and dehydration while attending an award ceremony on Sunday, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis told reporters.
The state government organized the Maharashtra Bhushan Award event between 11:30 am and 1 pm at an open ground in Mumbai’s Kharghar area on Sunday, which was attended by federal home minister Amit Shah and state chief Eknath Shinde.
More than one million people attended the event, according to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers.
