Torkham is a trading point between Pakistan and Afghanistan, located at the border of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and eastern Afghan province of Nangarhar.
A massive landslide near the Torkham border in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province left two people dead and over 20 trucks buried, officials said on Tuesday.
Additionally, dozens of people are feared to be trapped inside in the landslide after a mound of earth caved in on the main road passing through Khyber Pass in the Pakistani province.
"Twenty to twenty-five containers are buried in the wreckage," Abdul Nasir Khan, who serves as the deputy commissioner of the Khyber district, told local media. "The wreckage is quite extensive and our rescue operation is continuing with heavy machinery."
Khyber district's deputy commissioner elaborated that two Afghanistan nationals were confirmed dead in the landslide and rescuers were making efforts to recover more bodies from the site of the incident.
On the other hand, Pakistan's emergency helpline, Rescue 1122 spokesperson Bilal Faizi informed that another eight injured were given first aid while four others were shifted to a hospital.
Also, Faizi said that 12 ambulances, three heavy excavators, and four fire vehicles were rushed to the incident site to help in rescue operations.
The landslide took place after a thunder and lightning storm struck the area at around 2.30 am on Tuesday on the main road that connects Pakistan with Afghanistan.
