'We Regret': Ukrainian Apology Over Kali Tweet Fails to Quell Indian Outrage
Kiev has faced a backlash for a tweet that portrayed Hindu Goddess Kali in what Delhi describes as a denigrating manner on Sunday.
Indians have rejected Kiev's efforts to mend bilateral relations and "regret" over a controversial Sunday tweet that Indians claim is blasphemy.
The now-deleted Defense Ministry tweet depicted a cloud on one side and a picture of Hindu Goddess Kali in Marilyn Monroe's upskirt pose on the other, captioning it as a "work of art".
The tweet
caused an uproar in India, prompting Ukraine's Deputy Foreign Minister Emine Dzhaparova to attempt to smooth relations by posting that she felt "regret" over the "distorted manner", in which Kiev had depicted the Indian goddess on Tuesday. She also claimed that the European country "respects unique Indian culture and highly appreciates the support from India."
However, her efforts to make amends seem to have failed to calm Indian anger.
Kanchan Gupta, a senior advisor at Delhi's Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, called the tweet an assault on Hindu sentiments and said that the Ukraine government is not on the path to "mutual respect and friendship".
He also branded the Ukrainian ministry's actions as "brazen hate speech."
Several others took to Twitter and slammed the Ukrainian government for not apologizing properly.
Kiev's tweet came about a month after Dzhaparova visited India seeking New Delhi's mediation in the Ukraine conflict. However, during her visit, Dzhaparova claimed India's position on the Ukrainian crisis was "unbalanced" -- a remark that swiftly provoked a reaction from India's Foreign Ministry.
“Our position on the conflict in Ukraine has been articulated many times. I don’t know that the word unbalanced is something we have worked with. We have certainly worked towards peace, stressing dialogue and diplomacy,” Indian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said in response.
