The India Meteorological Department has warned several coastal states to be prepared for harsh weather, forecasting heavy rains in many areas, including Tamil Nadu, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya and Karnataka over the next five days.
India's weather department has warned states on the country's coast that the cyclonic storm Mocha is forming in the south-east part of the Bay of Bengal on 6 May.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the storm will probably make landfall around 7 May (Sunday), and thereafter, it is likely to "intensify into a cyclonic storm while moving roughly northward towards the Bay of Bengal."
The IMD added that the wind speed will be around 80 km/h on Sunday in the affected areas.
"The system is under constant watch and being monitored regularly. The details of its path and intensification will be provided after the formation of the low-pressure area," the IMD said in its statement.
Coastal states such as Odisha and West Bengal are preparing for the emergency.
Personnel in the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been briefed so that they are in readiness to face the cyclonic storm.
The first cyclonic storm of 2023 for India has been given the name Cyclone Mocha by Yemen, which named the storm after its port city Mocha - a place famed for its coffee industry.
Meanwhile, many eastern states and southern Indian states will witness heavy rainfall from 7 May until 10 May.
