On Sunday, the temperature in parts of Delhi soared above 45 degrees Celsius - the area of Najafgarh reported the highest at 46.3 degrees Celsius.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of heatwaves across Delhi and its adjoining regions, as well as parts of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh.
A heatwave warning has been issued for Chandigarh, Delhi, West Uttar Pradesh, West Rajasthan, East Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, East Madhya Pradesh and Gangetic West Bengal for the next five days, the IMD has stated
"When actual maximum temperature reaches 45 degrees Celsius or more for two consecutive days, on the second day a heatwave is declared over the station," the weather department said in its daily bulletin.
The IMD has also predicted that a fresh western disturbance may bring relief - light rain - and the temperature could drop by between 3 and 5 degrees Celsius from 24 May.
