A new survey conducted on Chinese citizens' outlook on different countries has found that India is the least popular of all the countries, trailing even the United States.Over 30 percent of the respondents believe that India has a “great” or “somewhat great” impact on China’s national security.The survey, which involved interviewing 2,662 Chinese mainland citizens over the age of 18 through an online questionnaire, found that a majority of them are concerned about the international security situation.More than 52 percent of the respondents said that the US exerts the greatest impact on China’s national security, more than any other nation. A little more than 12 percent of Chinese respondents hold favourable views towards the US, just a tad better than perceptions about India.The National Security Strategy (NSS) released by the Biden administration last year describes China as Washington’s “most consequential geopolitical challenge”. Beijing has consistently objected to Washington’s interference on the issue of Taiwan as well as American efforts to rally other Indo-Pacific nations into anti-Beijing groupings, such as the trilateral military AUKUS pact.Russia Ranks Most Popular Nation Among ChineseWhen it comes to Russia, more than 58 percent of the respondents hold favourable views about their northern neighbour, the most of any country.Bilateral ties between China and Russia have expanded significantly since last February when President Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping met in Beijing. Both the leaders said that “friendship between the two states has no limits” and there “no forbidden areas of cooperation”, per a joint statement.Since last year, bilateral trade has touched record volumes, with Russia crude exports to China also hitting an all-time high amid a global churn in energy prices caused by Western efforts to phase out Russian commodities from the global supply chains.Most Chinese Citizens Blame Collective West for Ukraine ConflictAt 80 percent, an overwhelming majority of survey respondents said that the US and its Western allies should be held the “most accountable” for precipitating the Ukraine conflict last year.Less than 10 percent of the respondents pinned the blame on Russia, per the survey findings.Over 15 percent of Chinese citizens said that Russia’s security concerns about the eastward expansion of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was the “most important issue in the Ukrainian crisis”, per survey findings.

The 2023 Public Opinion Polls: Chinese Outlook on International Security was conducted by The University, an influential Chinese university which is also the alma mater of President Xi Jinping.
A new survey conducted on Chinese citizens' outlook on different countries has found that India is the least popular of all the countries, trailing even the United States.
The survey findings show that only around eight percent of the respondents hold “favourable” or “somewhat favourable” views about India, with which Beijing has been involved in a military standoff in the eastern Ladakh region since April-May 2020.
Over 30 percent of the respondents believe that India has a “great” or “somewhat great” impact on
China’s national security.
The survey, which involved interviewing 2,662 Chinese mainland citizens over the age of 18 through an online questionnaire, found that a majority of them are concerned about the international security situation.

Around 34.1 percent of the respondents rated the impact of the ongoing Ukraine crisis on civilian life as the “most important issue”. Chinese people’s safety and economic interests in Ukraine and the impact on the global energy supply chains have been ranked as the next most important issues in the ongoing Ukraine conflict.
