Bengaluru, known for the past few years as the silicon valley of India, has often come under attack over the poor urban planning of the city which has resulted in frequent flooding.
The city of Bengaluru in India's Karnataka state needs about INR 28Bln ($363Mln) to fix its drainage and prevent flooding, an international property consultancy Knight Frank India has said in a report.
Bengaluru, home to about 3,500 IT offices and start-ups, is beset with severe traffic and the roads are riddled with potholes. During rainy weather the roads become almost impassable, with citizens witnessing traffic snarls for hours.
During the rainy season, companies usually ask employees to work from home as the city's administration fails to clear traffic.
It's also worth noting that the city's population has doubled over the past two decades - from an estimated six million in 2002 to 13 million in 2023 and is expected to reach 18 million in 2031.
Similarly, the share of the built-up area of Bengaluru has increased from 37.4 percent in 2002 to 93.3 percent in 2020, said an analyst from Knight Frank India - an international property consultancy.
On 22 May, a 23-year-old techie died after her car got stuck in a flooded underpass in Bengaluru.
