WFI Chief Vows to Hang Himself 'If Any Harassment Charges Proven'
Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, chief of India’s wrestling federation, had previously rejected all charges levelled by Indian grapplers against him. The wrestlers have alleged that Singh had sexually harassed female athletes, including a minor.
As the protest against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh escalates, on Wednesday, he once again refuted all accusations and said that he would hang himself if any charges against him are proven.
“If a single allegation against me is proven, I will hang myself. If you (wrestlers) have any evidence, present it to the Court, and I am ready to accept any punishment,” he said.
Singh's announcement came on the day when Delhi Police sources told media outlets that they had not found any sufficient evidence to corroborate the allegations made by female wrestlers or to warrant the arrest of the influential politician.
The police will submit a report to court within 15 days, a senior official said, requesting not to be named.
However, in a tweet, the Delhi Police said the case was still under investigation.
"Some media channels are broadcasting the news of the police filing the final report in the case filed by the women wrestlers. This news is totally wrong. This case is still under investigation and proper report will be placed in the court only after complete investigation," it said.
WFI chief’s rebuttal came a day after the athletes went to Haridwar intending to
immerse their medals in the Ganga River as a protest against him.
However, farmers’ leader Naresh Tikait intervened and convinced them to refrain from doing so. A Khap mahapanchayat (congregation) has been called on Thursday in Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh to discuss a further course of action.
Several representatives of different khaps and their heads hailing from Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Delhi are expected to participate in the mahapanchayat.
