Bihar state chief Nitish Kumar on Monday said the mega opposition meet scheduled to be held on 12 June in the state has been postponed.While talking to the media after attending a function in the state capital Patna, Kumar, who is also the chief of Janata Dal United (JD-U), said that the new date for the meeting will be announced after consultation of all the political parties.“We had to put off the 12 June meeting after the Congress and another party conveyed to me that they found the date inconvenient. I have therefore decided to postpone the meet and asked the Congress to suggest a new date after consultation with other parties”, Kumar stated.However, he asserted that he has made it very clear that all parties which agree to attend the meeting must be represented by the respective heads.If any party insists that it be represented by someone else, that would not be acceptable, he stated.Clarifying his statement, the Bihar state chief said: “For example, there was an impression that the Congress may send someone else other than its president. This was something we could not accept”.Notably, Congress state unit chief Akhilesh Prasad Singh said that his party was planning to send “one state chief and another senior member” to the meeting.Soon after Singh's statement, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the opposition party in the state, said that despite being part of the state government, neither Rahul Gandhi nor Kharge is giving importance to the initiative of the JD-U chief.Kumar has been meeting with leaders of non-BJP parties with the aim of forming an alliance against the BJP-led federal government in the upcoming 2024 parliamentary polls.According to media reports, at least 16 political parties, including Congress, West Bengal's governing Trinamool Congress, Delhi's governing Aam Aadmi Party, and the Nationalist Congress Party confirmed they would attend the meeting.The opposition parties will discuss fielding one candidate against the BJP to contest every parliamentary seat for the national elections in 2024, media reports suggest.Parliamentary polls are scheduled to be held in April-May 2024. In the previous elections, held in 2019, the BJP won 303 seats out of 543, while Congress got only 52 seats.
