India is the world's biggest user of groundwater with approximately 27 million borewells, most of which are left unsealed when they dry up.
A massive rescue operation has been underway for 12 hours to save a two-and-a-half-year-old girl who fell into a 300-foot-deep borewell on Tuesday afternoon in Sehore district of India's Madhya Pradesh state.
The girl has been identified as Shrishti Kushwaha. She was playing with her friends on the field at Mugavali Village when she suddenly tripped and fell into the borewell.
The police officials told Indian media on Wednesday that almost 12 hours on, the rescue team continues, and they have managed to pull the girl up at a depth of 20–30 feet of the borewell.
The team is making use of heavy earth movers to drill the ground and oxygen support is being provided to the girl.
“We have to reach a depth of 30 feet. We will reach up to the level of the child within a few hours. After that horizontal drilling will be done by the (National Disaster Response Force) team and the child will be rescued,” Sehore Collector Ashish Tiwari told Indian media.
Madhya Pradesh State Chief Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who belongs to Sehore district, took cognizance of the incident and directed officials to ensure that the girl is pulled out safely.
