Five Foreign Militants Killed Along Line of Control
12:53 16.06.2023 (Updated: 13:56 16.06.2023) In 2021 India and Pakistan signed a ceasefire agreement to end violence along the Line of Control (LoC) and although violence has decreased there, major infiltration bids by Pakistani militants threaten the fragile peace.
Five foreign militants were killed in a gun battle with the armed forces along the
Line of Control (LoC), a military control line that divides the region of
Jammu and Kashmir between India and Pakistan.
The Chinar Corps of the Indian army, which is responsible for military actions in the Kashmir region, said an infiltration bid had been foiled by its "alert troops along the LoC in the Keran sector".
According to J&K police, a gun battle broke out between militants and a team consisting jointly of local police and Indian army officers after authorities received a tip-off about the presence of militants in the village of Juma Gund in the Kupwara district.
Kashmir police's official Twitter account quoted a senior police officer as saying that that a search operation in Kupwara district has been launched to make sure none of the terrorists
survived the gun battle.
The militants are suspected to be Pakistani nationals.
Friday's incident is the second infiltration attempt to have taken place along the LoC this week. On Tuesday, local police said that two militants were killed in a joint operation by the Army and Police in the Machil sector.
Kashmir Issue in India-Pakistan Relationship
India and Pakistan both claim Jammu and Kashmir in its entirety and have fought three wars over it since 1947.
New Delhi has blamed Pakistan for allegedly backing cross-border terrorism since 1989. Pakistan is also accused of backing local Kashmiri militants and separatist groups - charges denied vigorously by Islamabad.
India and Pakistan signed a ceasefire along the LoC in February 2021 which at the time was considered a breakthrough, given that the diplomatic tensions peaked after the revocation of Kashmir's semi-autonomous status in 2019.
According to data from the Ministry of Home Affairs released to the Indian parliament, there were 34 infiltration bids in 2021 as opposed to 51 in 2020, 138 in 2019 and 143 in 2018.
In December 2022, the Ministry of Defence said India had thwarted a total of 12 infiltration bids by Pakistan along the LoC and killed 18 foreign terrorists.
The improved situation along the LoC had even prompted authorities to promote tourism in previously unexplored areas in the region. However, the two shoot-outs this week will raise concern within the security establishment.
Furthermore, 10 Indian army personnel - including five elite commandos - were killed by militants in Poonch district along the LoC in April and May.
