Since December 1987, the UN General Assembly has been observing June 26 as its International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking to strengthen action and cooperation in achieving a world free of drug abuse.
India's federal Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday said that his government had adopted a zero-tolerance policy against narcotics and they would root out the menace of drugs from India.
"We have decided that we will not allow any kind of narcotics trade in India, nor will we allow any drugs to be smuggled through India," Shah said in a video message while observing Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking Day.
"I fully believe that with coordinated efforts, we will successfully root out the menace of drugs and achieve our goal of a drugs-free India," the federal home minister said, adding, "we will not rest until this fight against drugs is won."
Shah said that cases against drug peddlers had increased by 181% — from 1,257 cases between 2006 and 2013 to 3,544 between 2014 and 2022.
He also added that 600,000 kg of drugs had been destroyed in the country since June 2022.
Meanwhile, Kerala state chief Pinarayi Vijayan also called for united efforts to create a drug-free world.
In a tweet, he said: "Let's remember that treatment, prevention, and compassion are crucial in our journey towards a drug-free world. Together, let's break the chains of addiction and offer hope to those in need."

Illicit Drug Markets Expanding, Compounding Global Crises: UN

The United Nations on Monday, in its annual report, said that the number of people who inject drugs is higher than previously estimated, as treatment services and other interventions fall short. This has been compounded by record numbers of displaced people due to humanitarian crises.
While more people are battling drug addiction, criminals continue to exploit conflicts and global crises to expand drug production, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) said in its annual report.
Worldwide, more than 296 million people used drugs in 2021, amounting to an increase of 23 percent over the previous decade.
