The Public Works Department (PWD) Minister in Congress-led Himachal Pradesh state government Vikramaditya Singh earned praise from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) politician and former State Chief Jai Ram Thakur for backing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC).Singh, son of six-time Himachal Pradesh state chief, the late Virbhadra Singh, and Congress’ state unit chief Pratibha Singh, said that Congress will be supporting the UCC whenever it comes and that the party has always contributed to driving unity and integrity forward.Reacting to Singh's statement, Thakur said to the media: “If Vikramaditya Singh has said this, it means that he listened to his conscience and expressed it.”Asserting that a lot of people from different political parties and ideologies support the proposed law, Thakur said: “When talks are held about the UCC, the inner voices of a lot of people from different political parties and ideologies tell them that if this decision is taken, it will be in the interest of the nation and society. We have always demanded that the law should be the same for all.”However, Singh’s statement is seen as a deviation from the party’s stand as the Congress Parliamentary Strategy Group held a meeting on Saturday at the residence of former party chief Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi and decided that it will only support the UCC after the draft is presented.Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray faction) parliamentarian Sanjay Raut also said on Saturday that they would comment on the matter only after the draft is submitted.While talking to the media, Raut said: “The draft of the proposed UCC is yet to be put in the public domain. It is neither with [the media] nor with us. Let the draft be completed, and then we will comment.”The UCC has been on the BJP’s agenda for a long time and Prime Minister Narendra Modi last week made a strong pitch about implementing the proposed law when he was addressing party workers virtually as he said that even the constitution mentions equal rights for all citizens.Since then, the debate over the UCC has intensified as the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) held a meeting to discuss the legal aspects of the proposed law and decided to oppose it.On 14 June, the Law Commission reopened its inquiry into the UCC by soliciting “views and ideas” from the public and “recognised” religious organisations within 30 days about the proposal.
