Controversy Erupts Over Former Madhya Pradesh State Chief's Tweet On RSS Ideologue
23:01 09.07.2023 (Updated: 19:20 11.07.2023) The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) is a Hindu nationalist organization that is the ideological fountainhead of India's federally ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
A massive political row erupted between India's governing BJP and the main opposition party Congress after ex-Madhya Pradesh State Chief Digvijaya Singh criticized former RSS chief M.S. Golwalkar in a social media post on Saturday.
Singh is one of the senior-most Congress politicians from Madhya Pradesh state, who is a Rajya Sabha (Upper House of Parliament) member at present. Previously, he served as the Madhya Pradesh State Chief for
two consecutive terms from 1993 to 2003.
In his tweet, Singh alleged that Golwalkar preferred to live under British rule rather than share the same set of rights with Muslims and backward communities of India.
"Must know what Guru Golwalkar ji's thoughts were for Dalits, backwards and Muslims and on the rights over water, forest and land," Singh wrote on the microblogging site.
However, after Singh's post started gaining traction on social media, RSS functionaries filed a police complaint against him in Indore city, alleging that Golwalkar never made the remarks cited by the former in his tweet.
The development was confirmed by the Madhya Pradesh Police.
"We received a complaint claiming that Singh in the post attributed some remarks to Golwalkar which the latter never made.
Based on this complaint, the case has been registered against Singh," Indore Police Commissioner Makarand Deuskar told reporters.
Singh's tweet also received condemnation from current Madhya Pradesh State Chief Shivraj Singh Chouhan who is a senior member of the BJP.
"It is the habit of Congress leaders to spread misinformation and hatred without knowing the facts. Revered Shri Golwalkar Guruji worked throughout his life to remove social differences and build a harmonious society," Chouhan stated.
