As Zelensky gambles on a 'NATO future' for Ukraine, Sputnik explores how far NATO's expansion has gone, pushing Russia to the brink as far as its national and security interests go.
The first day of the NATO summit has proved western allies do not share the same perspective for Ukraine, and the country is unlikely to enter the North Atlantic alliance anytime soon.
In the communique published following the first day of summit in Vilnius, NATO allies agreed that "Ukraine's future is in NATO," and the country would be exempt from fulfilling a standard Membership Action Plan for that. At the same time, no official invitation was extended.
White House National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby said that Ukraine was unlikely to join NATO in the near future and still needed to work on key reforms including good governance, rule of law and political adjustments, in order to meet the eligibility criteria of NATO membership.
Check out how NATO expanded close to the Russian border since the date of its formation in Sputnik's video.
