India Launches Latest Stealth Warship With Advanced Weapons
Amid an uptick in New Delhi's influence in the Indian Ocean Region (IOC), the Indian Navy has been inducting new weapons platforms, including submarines, missile corvettes, and stealth warships.
Indian President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday launched the country's latest warship at a state-run defense manufacturer in Kolkata city of West Bengal, A. Bharat Bhushan Babu, principal spokesman of the Indian Ministry of Defense (MoD) said.
The vessel has stealth
features and advanced weapons.
According to the spokesman, President Murmu reached Kolkata in the morning before arriving at the Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd (GRSE), a state-run naval manufacturing facility, to inaugurate the warship named Vindhyagiri for
India's blue water force.
Specifics of Indian Navy’s Project 17A Frigates
As per an official release, Vindhyagiri joins five other previous vessels that have been built under the ambitious Project 17A of the Indian Navy.
Under the project, seven modern frigates equipped with the latest gadgets were to be delivered to the Indian Navy. Vindhyagiri is the sixth such ship to be launched into ocean waters.
Before Vindhyagiri, five vessels, namely Nilgiri, Udaygiri, Himgiri, Taragiri, and Dunagiri were inducted into service by the South Asian nation's maritime force.
INS Vindhyagiri is named after a mountain located in the southern Indian state of Karnataka. Notably, all its five predecessors have been named after a hill range from the state.
In addition to enhanced stealth ingredients, and the latest weapons, these warships are also fitted with modern sensors and state-of-the-art platform management systems.
In line with the government's Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-reliant India) initiative, the designs of the Project 17A frigates were developed by the
Warship Design Bureau, the Indian Navy's very own design platform which is tasked with designing warships of the force.
The Indian Navy further mentioned that 75 percent content of these ships is local, having been indigenously developed by "micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
In this light, "the launch of Vindhyagiri is an apt testament to the incredible progress our Nation has made in building a self-reliant naval force," the Indian Navy noted.
