Ten Rescued From Himachal Reservoir After Night-Long Operation
India’s northern state of Himachal Pradesh has been battered by heavy rainfall and has witnessed landslides, cloudbursts, and flash floods. All this has caused a huge loss to the state's economy and natural resources.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) managed to rescue ten people trapped in a reservoir in India's Himachal Pradesh state after a night-long rescue operation, media reports said on Monday, quoting officials.
Five of them were forest department employees, they added.
The people got trapped in the
Kol Dam reservoir in Mandi on Sunday evening after their boat was stuck. It occurred as the water level rose due to
heavy rainfall in the state.
Soon after getting the information, a team of NDRF and local administration officials rushed to the spot and launched a
rescue operation.
As per the state emergency operation centre, due to incessant rainfall during the monsoon this year, as many as 338 people have
died in rain-related incidents while 38 others are still missing.
The Himachal Pradesh state government has declared the whole state as a “natural calamity affected area”.
The state government has said that there has been a monetary loss due to the rains amounting to around INR 80.14 billion ($964.2 million) since June 24.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for the state as it said that “heavy-to-very-heavy rainfall with estimates ranging from 115.6 to 204.4 mm are expected in the state on August 22, 23 and 24."
