Punjab's Caretaker Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi said that the River Sutlej has swollen to an unprecedented level in 35 years earlier this week.
Around 100,000 people have been evacuated from low-lying villages in Pakistan's Punjab state, an official told media on Wednesday.

“We have rescued 100,000 people and transferred them to safer places," Farooq Ahmad, spokesman for the Punjab emergency services, told media.

A high flood warning for the River Sutlej was on Tuesday, after which rescue operations began. The river, traversing both northern India and eastern Pakistan, has undergone a significant surge following New Delhi’s release of excess water from reservoirs due to the ongoing monsoon season.
A heavy flood warning is also issued for the River Jhelum from August 23-25.
The summer monsoon brings South Asia 70-80 percent of its annual rainfall between June and September every year.
In the past few years, death and destruction caused by heavy downpours appear to have become a regular occurrence in the region. Last year, 1,739 people were killed after downpours inundated one-third of Pakistan.
North Indian states are also witnessing heavy rainfall since July, and hundreds of people have reportedly died.
Rescue workers monitor the flood situation from a bridge built over a stream in Rawalpindi on July 19, 2023. More than 14,000 people and their cattle were evacuated from villages in eastern Pakistan, authorities said on July 18, following the arrival of monsoon rains across South Asia. - Sputnik India, 1920, 23.07.2023
