Pakistani officials on Friday said that at least 50 people, including eight children, had died since 25 June because of rain-related incidents. The country's weather forecast agency has warned of more rains for at least a week.The eastern part of Lahore city witnessed heavy downpours on Wednesday and Thursday, killing at least 19 people in the city because of collapsing roofs and other reasons. Several reports in the media said that 35 percent of residents in Lahore were left without electricity and water.On Thursday, at least eight children were killed after a landslide struck a mountainous area in the country’s north-west Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Earlier in June, heavy rains caused by cyclone Biparjoy left 27 dead. Pakistan, which has seen erratic weather conditions for the past few years, is said to be one of the most vulnerable and worst affected countries because of global warming. The country is responsible for less than one percent of global greenhouse gas emissions.

In the past few years, death and destruction caused by heavy downpours appear to have become a regular occurrence in the south-east Asian region. Last year, 1,739 people were killed after a downpour inundated one-third of Pakistan.
