Economist Utsa Patnaik of the Columbia University Press alleged that the UK drained India of nearly $45 trillion from 1765 to 1938.
The world has watched and celebrated India's successful landing on the Moon's south pole, and many countries congratulated the South Asian nation for achieving something once considered impossible. But haters still can't resist.
Soon after Chandrayaan's launch, journalists from the United Kingdom said India should give UK aid money back.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), UK journalist Sophie Corcoran said London should not send aid to India since it has an advanced space programme. She also said it's time "we get our money back".
Another British news presenter, Patrick Christy, in his show reiterated the same views, saying that India should return 2.3 billion pounds (INR 240 billion) aid given by UK to India between 2016 and 2021.
Soon after similar views surfaced on social media, Indian netizens retorted them, saying to first return the $45 trillion which the UK looted from India during its 200 years of colonialism.
"White supremacists are always going to be hating on the countries they robbed $45 trillion from! Yes, you will pay every single penny back to India that you stole a race of people invaded other countries for the valuable wealth, and also kept people of colour slaves to build their countries! Keep on preaching racist Karen! This is what a supremacist of the pale colour looks like", X user JIX5A tweeted.
Another user, Krishna Kumar, wrote: "Will you return the 1.7 billion sterling due in 1947 , besides other money which was unreasonable extracted for 200 years ?"
The buzz soon caused "45 trillion" to trend on X. The amount is 15 times more than the UK's gross domestic product (GDP) today.
