Pakistan Court Suspends Imran Khan’s Jail Sentence in Toshakhana Case
A Pakistani trial court had sentenced Khan to three years in jail on 5 August for underreporting the value of foreign gifts he had received during his time in power, or the ‘Toshakhana’ case.
The
Islamabad High Court has suspended former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s
three-year jail sentence in the
'Toshakhana' case, a spokesperson for the ex-leader told reporters on Tuesday.
Naeem Haider Panjutha, the spokesperson for Imran Khan on legal affairs, said that the court has “accepted our request to suspend Khan’s sentence”, adding that a detailed judgement would be released later.
The case against Khan, who heads Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI), was introduced by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
The former PM has denied the charges, maintaining that he has been denied a fair trial.
Khan Could be Arrested in Cypher Case, Spokesperson Says
Panjutha, however, expressed fears that Khan could now face possible arrest in the
“cypher” case, which relates to the diplomatic cable documenting conversation between Pakistan’s then Ambassador to Washington and Biden administration officials last March.
“We have already requested the court that Imran Khan should be given 24 hours, as per due process of the law, once the police asks the court for his arrest in the cypher case”, Panjutha said.
The ex-Prime Minister is facing trial in over 100 cases, most of which he says were brought against him after his ouster from power last April in a parliamentary no-confidence motion.
Khan has claimed that these cases against him are “
politically-motivated”.
