Ependymoma is one of the rare tumors that occur in 22 in every 10 lakh people. If left untreated, these cases lead to 100% mortality rate.
A 42-year-old man suffering from a rare brain tumor ‘ependymoma’ has got a new lease of life after he was successfully operated through laparoscopic surgery by doctors at a private hospital in Uttar Pradesh state’s Lucknow city.
Ependymoma tumors can form in the brain or spinal cord and develop from ependymal cells. Tumors develop when ependymal cells undergo uncontrollable growth, obstructing the crucial flow of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) that safeguards the brain and spinal cord.
The patient, who lives in Bihar state's Siwan city, used to work as a plumber in Dubai. A few months back, he experienced blurred vision, headaches, and vomiting.
After consulting with multiple doctors, the patient sought treatment at Wellsun Medicity Hospital in Lucknow City a week ago. The doctors at the hospital confirmed that he was suffering from a rare ependymoma tumor.
Dr. Bhawan Nangrawal, the head of the surgical team at Wellsun Medicity Hospital, told Indian media that performing an open surgery posed a higher risk as the tumor was deep inside the brain.
"Any attempt to remove the tumor could have potentially caused harm to other vital parts of the organ. Hence, laparoscopic surgery was performed by making a 15 mm hole," Dr. Nangrawal said.
The surgery, which took place on August 22, lasted one and a half hours.
During the procedure, the surgeons successfully removed the tumor and addressed the issue of hydrocephalus fluid accumulation in the third ventricle.
The doctors created an alternate pathway for the absorption of fluid.
Within a week, the patient recovered and was discharged on Monday.
