Moscow had played a key role in the creation of Bangladesh in 1971 by providing essential naval support to New Delhi and Dhaka to ward off a joint military threat from Pakistan and the US.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is scheduled to embark on a working visit to Bangladesh from Thursday after attending the East Asia Summit (EAS) and other ASEAN-related engagements in Jakarta.

"During the upcoming visit, the prospects for further development of bilateral relations will be thoroughly considered and an exchange of views on the most pressing regional and international issues is planned," Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told reporters at a press briefing in Moscow this week.

Zakharova said that Lavrov would hold talks with his Bangladesh counterpart A.K. Abdul Momen and also call on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during his visit.
The Russian Foreign Minister is scheduled to travel to New Delhi to attend the G-20 Summit on 9-10 September after concluding his engagements in Bangladesh.

Expanding Civil Nuclear, Defense Ties

Russia state major Rosatom is involved in developing Bangladesh’s first civil nuclear power plant at Rooppur.
The dual-reactor 2.4 Gigawatt-Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) is expected to be operationalized in the fall of 2024.
Alexei Likhachev, the Director-General of Rosatom, has said that the company would deliver nuclear fuel to the Rooppur NPP this month.

The two countries are dynamically developing the "mutually beneficial relations” in the realm of defense, as stated by the Russian defense ministry after military-level consultations last month on the sidelines of ARMY 2023” International Military-Technical Forum (IMTF) in Moscow.

The defense talks were attended by Russia’s Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Fomin and Tariq Ahmed Siddiqi, who is Prime Minister Hasina’s special advisor on security matters.

The two countries have also expressed a firm desire to enhance energy cooperation in conventional and renewable sources.

Hasina said at the Qatar Economic Forum in May that Bangladesh is ready to buy Russian oil at an affordable price, in the wake of global volatility in crude prices which have adversely affected Global South nations.
