Trudeau Mocked by Opponents in Canada as his Plane ‘Grounded’ in India
12:47 12.09.2023 (Updated: 17:37 19.09.2023) Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is being mocked back home after his plane suffered a technical snag in New Delhi, delaying his return to Canada by almost two days.
State-backed Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) quoted Trudeau’s office as saying that the Canadian Prime Minister and his delegation would depart from New Delhi on Tuesday afternoon.
A statement from the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) said that a “replacement plane”, originally en route India through Italy, has been diverted from London.
The plane will reportedly leave the United Kingdom on Tuesday morning (GMT).
The RCAF CC-150 Polaris plane which developed a glitch in New Delhi involves a part that has to be replaced, Canadian National Defense said.
Canadian authorities said that the situation with regards to Trudeau's plane remains "fluid".
According to his original itinerary, Trudeau was scheduled to depart from New Delhi on Sunday evening at 8:00 PM IST, the day the
G20 Summit concluded in the Indian capital.
Meanwhile, Canada’s federal opposition Conservative Party of Canada (CPC) has taken potshots at Trudeau over being “grounded” in India.
The Conservative Party described Trudeau’s India visit as a “clown show”.
Pierre Poilievre, the CPC leader and a Prime Ministerial contender, wrote on social media platform X that Trudeau was experiencing the “same flight delays” as he had imposed on Canadians through his “mismanagement” of the country’s airport system.
Trudeau’s Meeting With PM Modi
Trudeau met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the margins of the G20 Summit at weekend, according to a statement from the Indian Prime Minister’s Office.
The Indian statement said that Modi conveyed to Trudeau India’s “strong concerns about continuing anti-India activities of extremist elements in Canada”.
“They are promoting secessionism and inciting violence against Indian diplomats, damaging diplomatic premises, and threatening the Indian community in Canada and their places of worship,” Modi told Trudeau, amid New Delhi’s ongoing concerns about the activities of radical Sikh entities based in Canada.
In the past few months, Indian diplomatic missions in Canada and other western nations have faced threats from
supporters of Khalistan movement, which advocates a separate Sikh homeland. Canada has the largest Sikh diaspora in the world outside the state of Punjab, according to official estimates.
“The nexus of such forces with organized crime, drug syndicates and human trafficking should be a concern for Canada as well. It is essential for the two countries to cooperate in dealing with such threats,” New Delhi has said.
Meanwhile, the readout of the meeting issued by the Canadian PMO makes no mention of the issue whatsoever.
“Prime Minister Trudeau raised the importance of respecting the rule of law, democratic principles, and national sovereignty,” the Canadian statement said.
