The free lunch scheme was launched by the Indian government back in 1995 to provide nutritious food to students in government schools.
Around fifty school students from the Indian state of Bihar were hospitalised after consuming their lunch, which reportedly contained a dead chameleon, media said.
Mid-day meal is a school lunch provided to children in government and government-aided schools in India as a part of a scheme to improve their nutritional levels and support their education.
Dr Sudha Jha from the Sadar Hospital said, "They have complained that a chameleon was found in the mid-day meal. They had consumed the same food. All the children here are stable and symptom-free. We have kept them under observation. Everything is normal now. Their parents are with them. There is nothing to worry about."
The school kids were reportedly ill on Tuesday afternoon, complaining of stomach ache and vomiting.
However, this is not the first time such incidents have been reported earlier.
In August, nearly 70 students in Delhi’s Sagarpur area complained of pain and vomiting allegedly after they consumed a mid-day meal, police officers said.
In July, in Uttar Pradesh, students of two government junior high schools in Sarai Gulharia village and Balapar village fell sick after consuming a midday meal containing insects and worms.
