The Indian government has refuted the claim by credit agency Moody's about India's biometric system and said that assertions made by the agency are baseless and lacking evidence.On Monday, Moody questioned the reliability of the biometric technology in Aadhaar - a 12-digit unique identification number or universal identity card - especially when used by people in hot and humid climates, and said that service denials had been caused by the inclement weather. Answering Moody's claim on the efficacy of Aadhaar biometrics in India's hot and humid climate, the government said biometric details can also be submitted via contactless means such as face authentication and iris identification. The government added that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank have praised the use of Aadhaar.

Aadhaar is a 12-digit unique identification number managed by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) - part of the Indian government. It is not a voter identity card but an identification document which records and verifies an Indian citizen's details, including biometric and demographic data.

On Monday, Moody questioned the reliability of the biometric technology in Aadhaar - a 12-digit unique identification number or universal identity card - especially when used by
people in hot and humid climates, and said that service denials had been caused by the inclement weather.
"A certain investor service has, without citing any evidence, made sweeping assertions against Aadhaar, the most trusted digital ID in the world. Over the past decade, a billion Indians have expressed their trust in Aadhaar by using it to authenticate themselves more than 100 billion times," the government said in a statement.
Answering Moody's claim on the efficacy of Aadhaar biometrics in India's hot and humid climate, the government said biometric details can also be submitted via contactless means such as face authentication and iris identification.
The government added that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank have praised the use of Aadhaar.
"The report also avers that there are security and privacy vulnerabilities in a centralised Aadhaar system. The facts in this regard have been repeatedly disclosed in response to parliamentary questions, where Parliament has been categorically informed that so far no breach has been reported from the Aadhaar database," the statement added.
