In an unprecedented assault on Israel, Hamas militants executed a colossal attack on Saturday morning, unleashing a barrage of over 5,000 rockets. This offensive stands as one of the most significant and audacious strikes the country has witnessed in years.
As tensions between Israel and Palestine escalated on Saturday followed by the attack by Hamas militants, Palestinian minister Ahmed Majdalani said that the “sharp deterioration of the situation in the Gaza Strip is the result of political impasse”.
Minister of Social Development of Palestine and Member of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organisation Ahmed Majdalani told Sputnik: “What has happened in the Gaza Strip is a natural result of the policy of Israeli occupation and the blocking of the political perspective by the Netanyahu government, which also excludes the internationally recognized two-state solution from the agenda, obstructs the implementation of international resolutions and tries to impose unilateral steps.”
The minister went on to say that "Palestinians have a legitimate right to defend themselves and resist occupation".
Majdalani warned of the consequences of "Israel's escalation against Gaza" and expressed concern about preparations for an invasion of the coastal enclave that would destroy its economic and social infrastructure.
The Palestinian minister even called on the international community to “immediately intervene to stop the aggression and protect the Palestinian people in Gaza”.
He said: “Egypt, which has always intervened to contain the situation in the Gaza Strip, is already making efforts to stop the escalation. We hope that the Egyptian brothers will begin political steps at all levels to stop the aggression.”
While talking to Sputnik, Margarita, a resident of Ramat Gan city of Tel Aviv said that ''although she woke up to the sirens at 6.30 a.m. (local time) but the situation in her city is quite calm as compared to the whole country.''
“So I didn't see anything extremely dangerous. I didn't came out of my house all this time and even reached the safe space when there were sirens,” she said while adding that she however feels anxious and couldn’t sleep after the first siren.
The Israeli citizen expressed deep sympathy for the people affected by this terrible situation, noting the tragic loss of life that occurred merely at bus stops or even in vehicles.
“There is no official statement from the government regarding those who have been killed on the streets but the pictures I saw on social media are really awful,” Margarita said.
She, however, stated that ''such incidents spread fear among people and some might even move out of Israel but in general there is no panic among the citizens as they believe that everything is going to be fine soon.''
Margarita expressed her deep sense of national pride as she shared the government's call to donate blood at local hospitals. She recounted how her friend had personally witnessed the overwhelming response, capturing an image of the sheer multitude of people who answered the call. “It was amazing to see a lot of people and I am really proud of Israeli people as they support each other when there is trouble,” she said.
Israel Was Not Prepared for Assault
Meanwhile, Retired Brig. Gen. Dr. Meir Elran, a senior research fellow and head of three security programs at the Institute for National Security Studies at Tel Aviv University said that the incident is a major blow to the intelligence as well as the operation of the IDF.
“We were not really prepared for that. And this is really a major blow both to the intelligence and to the operation of the IDF. There is no doubt about that. We have to admit that [Hamas] has been preparing this [operation] for a long time. They have been trying to deceive and to hide this from us. And apparently they were successful. And this just shows you that here in this neighborhood, here in the Middle East, anything can happen. Even those things that you do not really predict will happen.,” Elran stated.
